Full Time Public Works Operator - Sanitation Department

Position Objectives:

The Sanitation Worker performs routine and manual work to pick up all residential and commercial refuse within the City of Roseau. The incumbent also assists with other public works tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Operates garbage truck along commercial and residential routes.
  • Picks up commercial refuse by backing up truck or directing coworker, hooking up and securing .dumpster and unloading contents into truck's container.

  • Picks up residential refuse by driving truck alongside container or physically lifting container to unload contents into truck.

  • Drives to landfill on State Highway 11; weighs the load and backs into bins to unload. (Involves approximately seven 30 mile trips per week.)

  • Maintains garbage truck by changing oil, greasing, and washing; notifies supervisor of other maintenance needs and necessary repairs.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Minimum Requirements:


  • Knowledge of City's geography, business and residential areas, and specific garbage routes
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures related to work place safety
  • Skill to safely operate a garbage truck in inclement weather and while fully loaded.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual and repetitive tasks under inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 75 pounds




Valid Minnesota Class B driver's license required

Previous experience operating heavy equipment preferred.

Desirable Training and Experience:

Past experience in heavy equipment operation preferred.


Salary Range: $21.96-27.18/hr. depending on qualifications
